Go it Alone!

I set up as a locksmiths Manchester in my home town of Walkden two and a half years ago. I had previously owned a business employing seven people.

I made the decision to set up as a mobile Locksmiths Manchester a little under three years ago, on the underground homeward bound from another dull day in the office on London’s West end via Waterloo, sardined in to a dirty tube carriage with my nose clamped to an unwashed armpit. There has to be more to life than a daily 4-5 hour commute.  Work hard, make money have fun had always been my mantra, and suddenly the fun had all gone.  I just could not face another 20 years of daily commuting and working for someone else again. I have often heard it said that once you have run your own business you become unemployable – I agree.  Mid-40’s with a GCSE in music and woodwork doesn’t put your CV at the top of any pile.

It was time to do something for myself again – but what? I looked at several potential business opportunities. I settled on locksmithing as it had fascinated me from an early age where a trip to the locksmiths with y dad was a great treat – the smell of the oil and lots of shiny things to look at and even some on the counter to play with.  The owner, a friendly sort in a buff coloured shop coat always spoke to me and explained things with an infectious enthusiasm.
