What kind of laxative is the best?
If you’ve never had any trouble going to the toilet then the first time you get bunged up it can quite distressing, and you are left wondering what options you have. First of all, don’t panic, sometimes it is just a temporary thing, your body is adjusting to your new exercise regime or diet etc and it will clear itself in a day or two, so don’t reach for the senna tea just yet.
When you are sure that you can’t go and it has been more than 2 days since you last went, then make sure you see your doctor just in case there is something seriously wrong that is causing it. Once you’ve done that you should know if there is some medical problem that caused it, or if it is just a change in your lifestyle instead which you need to fix or let your body adjust too.
Then you can move onto the laxatives to help get things moving again, you might want to try osmotic laxatives first as they soften the stools to allow them to pass, but most people just go straight for the irritant laxatives which try to force your body to expel the contents of the bowel by making it contract. Most of those pills contain senna which is a natural laxative, but not all of them contain that. In fact if you want you can just buy the senna leaves and steep them to make a tea to enjoy, it will have the same effect (but make sure you follow the instructions on the pack!).
